Second-Quarter Surge Lifts Women’s Basketball Over Guilford Tech

Cedar Bluff, Va. — Southwest Virginia Community College used a strong second quarter and a balanced offensive effort to pull away from Guilford Technical Community College for a 61–53 women’s basketball victory Wednesday afternoon at the King Community Center.
After trailing 21–12 at the end of the opening quarter, the Flying Eagles responded with a decisive 21–5 run in the second period to take control of the game heading into halftime. SWCC continued to build momentum in the second half, outscoring Guilford Tech in both the third and fourth quarters to secure the home win.
Emma Owens led the Flying Eagles with a team-high 15 points, knocking down three shots from beyond the arc while adding six rebounds and three steals. Abby Berry finished with 13 points and six assists, while Kara Kelley added 11 points and five assists in a steady all-around performance.
Grace Harvey controlled the paint for SWCC, recording a double-double with 11 points and a game-high 12 rebounds, helping the Flying Eagles win the battle on the glass and limit second-chance opportunities down the stretch.
As a team, SWCC forced 31 turnovers and converted them into key scoring chances, using defensive pressure to slow Guilford Tech’s offense and close out the game.
