CEDAR BLUFF, Va. — Abby Berry delivered a strong scoring performance, but Southwest Virginia Community College couldn’t overcome a difficult shooting afternoon, falling 58-44 to Cape Fear Community College on Saturday inside the King Community Center.
Berry finished with a team-high 18 points, drilling four 3-pointers and grabbing nine rebounds in 39 minutes of work. Despite her effort, the Flying Eagles shot 22 percent from the field and 14 percent from beyond the arc, making it tough to build sustained momentum on the offensive end.
SWCC made its presence felt defensively, forcing 23 Cape Fear turnovers and totaling 10 steals. The pressure helped keep the game within reach, but the Buccaneers controlled the boards, outrebounding Southwest Virginia 42-30 and limiting second-chance opportunities for the home side.
Emma Owens added eight points for the Flying Eagles, while Kara Kelley contributed six points and two blocked shots. The Eagles continued to battle through all four quarters, playing their most competitive basketball late, but the early deficit ultimately proved too much to overcome.
Cape Fear was led by Kelize Velez-Galan and Monica Surratt with 17 points each, while Yamorie Hardison finished with 13 points and a game-high 13 rebounds.
