Shelby, N.C. — The Southwest Virginia Community College women’s basketball team battled on the road Saturday afternoon but came up short in a 61–49 setback at Cleveland Community College.
The Flying Eagles stayed within striking distance early, trailing just 12–10 after the first quarter, but Cleveland used a strong second period to take a 25–18 advantage into halftime. Southwest Virginia responded with its best offensive stretch in the third quarter, scoring 17 points, but the home team maintained control down the stretch to secure the win.
Abby Berry led Southwest Virginia with 17 points and a game-high 15 rebounds, recording a double-double while playing all 40 minutes. Grace Harvey added 12 points and 16 rebounds, giving the Flying Eagles two players with double-doubles in the contest. Kara Kelley finished with eight points and five assists, while Destiny Word contributed eight points off the bench.
Southwest Virginia held an edge on the glass, outrebounding Cleveland 55–43, including 19 offensive rebounds that created additional scoring opportunities. However, the Flying Eagles struggled to convert, shooting 24.3 percent from the field and 17.1 percent from three-point range.
Cleveland was led by De’Mya Phifer, who scored 21 points, while Sydnie Enste added 13 points and eight rebounds. The home team capitalized at key moments to pull away in the second half.
