Cedar Bluff, Va. – SWCC (4-2, 3-1) wasted no time with a dominating 13-0 run against Richard Bland (3-8, 3-5) in Friday afternoon's matchup at the King Community Center. The Flying Eagles maintained control throughout, earning a decisive 73-54 victory.
Strong defense and sharp outside shooting powered SWCC's fast start. Tazewell native Maddie Day capitalized on Richard Bland's 2-3 zone defense, sinking two three-pointers on consecutive possessions to open the game. Freshman Kierstin Johnson followed with a strong post move off a pass from Tamila Francis, securing a three-point play opportunity. Though Johnson missed the free throw, SWCC continued its relentless pressure. Francis later drained a three-pointer to cap the 13-0 opening burst in the first three minutes.
As the game progressed, SWCC leaned on its reliable inside game, outscoring Richard Bland 36-22 in the paint. Sophomore Paige Niethammer led the effort with a double-double, recording 18 points and 11 rebounds. Freshmen Kierstin Johnson and Grace Harvey added solid contributions with 8 points each, grabbing 9 and 7 rebounds, respectively.
Sophomore Maddie Day finished with 16 points, including four three-pointers. Freshman Emma Owens contributed 12 points, while Tamila Francis posted an all-around performance with 9 points, 5 rebounds, 7 assists, and 5 steals.
Richard Bland was paced by sophomore Aryauna Brent, who scored 18 points, fueled by five three-pointers. Freshman Ni'ana Hill had an impressive showing with 13 points, 13 rebounds, and 7 assists.
The Flying Eagles return to action on Sunday, December 15, when they host Fayetteville Tech. Tip-off is scheduled for 1:00 PM at the King Community Center.
