Southwest Uses Dominant 3rd Quarter to Pull Away in 52-37 Win Over Guilford Tech
CEDAR BLUFF, Va. — After leading 29-21 at halftime, the Southwest women's basketball team outscored Guilford Tech 21-4 in the third quarter to put the game out of reach for the Titans in a 52-37 win on Thursday night at the King Community Center.
Guilford Tech (4-9, 2-9) started out strong, leading 14-7 with under three minutes to play in the first quarter. Then, the Flying Eagles (10-4, 8-2) went on a 7-0 run to make it 14-14 after the first quarter. From there, The Flying Eagles used their stellar defense to pull away from the Titans, holding them to just 11 total points in the second and third quarters combined.
The Flying Eagles had 16 steals for the game, with six of the eight players who saw game action recording at least one steal. Southwest turned those steals into points as they outscored the Titans 31-13 in points off turnovers.
Destiny Jarnigan finished one rebound shy of a double-double. Jarnigan finished with 10 points and nine rebounds. Taylor Wilson led the team with eight assists and four steals. Her eight assists tied a season-high.
NOTES
- The Flying Eagles held Guilford Tech to 37 points. That's the second-fewest points allowed all season and fewest allowed in a conference game.
- Southwest outscored Guilford Tech 36-11 in the second and third quarters.
- Six of Jarnigan's nine rebounds were offensive.
