SHELBY, N.C. — The Flying Eagles brought their bats with them to Cleveland Community College, scoring 18 runs on 33 hits in the doubleheader. However, Cleveland CC had a strong showing offensively too, and took both games Sunday afternoon by the scores of 14-13 and 9-5.
Sunday was the conference opener for the Flying Eagles, after Saturday's games at Gaston College were canceled because of weather.
In the first game, the Yetis of Cleveland CC jumped out to a 5-1 lead through three innings. Southwest would score one in the fourth and had a six-run top of the fifth to take an 8-5 lead. The Flying Eagles led 13-10 going into the bottom of the seventh inning but were unable to close it out.
In the second game, Cleveland CC got out to another early lead at 6-0 through two. The Flying Eagles would score in each of the next four innings to make it a 6-5 game going into the bottom of the sixth inning. However, the Yetis added three runs in the bottom of the sixth to make it 9-5, which ended up as the final score. The Flying Eagles had 17 hits in game two compared to 16 in game one, but were unable to bring the runners home - unlike in the first game.
