Flying Eagles Fall on the Road at USC Sumter

Sumter, S.C. – Southwest Virginia Community College men’s soccer dropped a tough Region 10 contest on Saturday, falling 8–0 to USC Sumter.
The Fire Ants struck early and never looked back, building a 3–0 advantage in the first half. José Janiszewski opened the scoring in the 12th minute, followed by goals from Luciano Viejo and Lewis Henry to give the hosts control heading into halftime.
USC Sumter added five more tallies after the break. Ciro Ottado paced the attack with a hat trick, scoring in the 53rd, 59th, and 69th minutes. Viejo added his second of the day in the 58th minute, while the Fire Ants were also credited with a team goal in the 65th minute. Mwila Roberts provided an assist on Ottado’s final strike.
Despite the score line, SWCC goalkeeper Pedro Marcos Hernández turned in a busy shift, registering nine saves against 17 shots on goal. Offensively, Jacque Watson led the Flying Eagles with three shots, including two on frame, while Euan Whitty also recorded a shot on target.
USC Sumter’s Martin Pastrello earned the shutout in goal with two saves on the day.
Southwest Virginia will look to bounce back when the Flying Eagles return to action on Tuesday September 16th when the host USC Union. Kick-off is set for 2:00 PM.
