CEDAR BLUFF, VA – The Southwest Virginia Community College men’s soccer team made history on Tuesday afternoon, earning the first playoff win in program history with a 2–0 victory over USC Salkehatchie in the Region 10 Quarterfinals.
The match’s momentum swung in the Flying Eagles’ favor midway through the first half when goalkeeper Pedro Marcos Hernández made a crucial penalty kick save in the 35th minute, keeping the contest scoreless and firing up his teammates.
Southwest Virginia capitalized on that energy just minutes later when captain Euan Whitty delivered a stunning free-kick goal in the 44th minute, giving the Flying Eagles a 1–0 lead heading into halftime.
SWCC continued to control the tempo in the second half, and in the 85th minute, Carter Dillon sealed the victory with a composed finish off a cross from Sergio Salas. Hernández finished the match with five saves and a clean sheet, anchoring the defensive effort.
With the win, the Flying Eagles advance to the Region 10 Semifinals on Friday, October 24, where they will face top-seeded USC Union. Kickoff is set for 12:00 PM at USC Sumter.
