Cedar Bluff, VA — The Southwest Virginia Community College men’s soccer team came up just short on Sophomore Day, falling 2–1 to USC Lancaster on Friday afternoon. Despite a determined second-half rally and several key saves, the Flying Eagles couldn’t quite overcome an early deficit.
USC Lancaster broke through in the 38th minute when Caleb Boyce finished off a pass from Vinicius Teixeria, giving the Lancers a 1–0 edge heading into halftime. The visitors extended their lead midway through the second half as Teixeria tallied his second assist, setting up Andy Rivera for a 58th-minute goal to make it 2–0.
Refusing to go quietly, the Flying Eagles clawed back into the match in the 77th minute. Sophomore defender Adrian Berg threaded a well-timed pass to Sergio Salas, who slotted home the finish to cut the deficit in half. Southwest Virginia pressed hard in the closing minutes, generating multiple attacking chances but couldn’t find the equalizer before the final whistle.
Goalkeeper Pedro Marcos Hernández anchored the defense with six saves, while Salas and Noah Warner each registered shots on target.
With the result, Southwest Virginia concludes the regular season at 8–6–2 overall and 3–4–1 in Region 10 play. The Flying Eagles now turn their attention to postseason action, hosting USC Salkehatchie in the Region 10 Quarterfinals on Tuesday, October 21, with kickoff set for 12:00 PM at the SWCC Soccer Field.
