Balanced Attack Lifts Men's Soccer Over Montreat Reserves

CEDAR BLUFF, Va. — The Southwest Virginia Community College men’s soccer team picked up a strong home victory Thursday afternoon, defeating Montreat College’s reserve squad 3–1.
The Flying Eagles struck first in the 12th minute when freshman forward Euan Whitty finished a chance off a setup from Oscar Seliger. Montreat answered quickly, converting a penalty kick in the 14th minute to level the score at 1–1.
Southwest Virginia responded in the 24th minute as Jacque Watson put away a feed from Seliger to give the Eagles a 2–1 lead at the break. The momentum carried into the second half when Seliger capped off his standout performance with a goal in the 70th minute, assisted by Watson, to extend the advantage to 3–1.
SWCC controlled the match statistically, outshooting Montreat 19–5 and holding a 7–4 edge in corner kicks. Seliger led the way with one goal and two assists, while Whitty and Watson each added a goal apiece.
In goal, Pedro Marcos Hernández earned the win with one save in the first half, while Cian Thomas closed the match with two second-half stops to secure the result.
With the win, Southwest Virginia improves to 3-4-1 overall (1-2-1 Region 10).
The Flying Eagles return to action on Sunday, September 21, when they travel to face USC Salkehatchie. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
