CEDAR BLUFF, Va. — Freshman guard Deonta Mozell delivered the best performance of his young career Friday night, pouring in a career-high 27 points, all off the bench, but the Southwest Virginia Community College men's basketball team fell 87-71 to Central Carolina Community College inside the King Community Center.
Mozell provided an instant spark for the Flying Eagles, shooting 9-of-13 from the field and 5-of-7 from long range in 26 high-energy minutes. His scoring punch fueled a productive SWCC bench effort, but Central Carolina's efficiency and balance proved to be too much down the stretch.
The Cougars shot 52.5 percent from the floor, paced by Jani Vanholten's 24 points and Ma'Kyi Butler's 16-point, 9-rebound outing. Central Carolina also did significant damage at the free throw line, converting 20 attempts to Southwest Virginia's eight.
The Flying Eagles stayed within striking distance early, trailing 43-38 at the break while shooting the ball exceptionally well from deep. SWCC finished 15-of-36 (41.7 percent) from three-point range, highlighted by sophomore David Frazier's flawless 5-for-5 shooting night, including a 3-for-3 mark from beyond the arc, finishing with 15 points.
Brice Wallace stuffed the stat sheet with 12 points, seven rebounds, four assists, and two steals, while point guard Auri Jacobs anchored the offense with a game-high nine assists.
Despite moving the ball well — totaling 18 assists — SWCC struggled to overcome 17 turnovers and a tough 47 percent clip at the free throw line. Central Carolina surged in the second half, outscoring the Flying Eagles 44-33 after the break to claim the road win.
