Cedar Bluff, VA - The Southwest Virginia Community College (SWCC) Flying Eagles (2-7, 1-6) men's basketball team suffered a tough loss to Cleveland Community College (8-7, 3-3) (CCC), falling 134-78 in a game where CCC’s high-powered offense dominated from start to finish. Despite some standout efforts from SWCC players, the Flying Eagles couldn’t overcome CCC's efficiency and relentless pace.
First Half: Early Struggles for SWCC
The game opened with CCC lighting up the scoreboard, scoring 71 points in the first half while shooting an outstanding 62.1% from the field. SWCC managed to keep pace early, posting 43 first-half points behind solid efforts from their key contributors, but turnovers and defensive breakdowns allowed the Cougars to pull away.
Freshman forward Adrian Hunter-Mayes was a bright spot for the Flying Eagles, showcasing his hustle on the boards and defensive intensity. Guard Corean Nelson also worked to ignite the offense, though CCC's defense limited the Flying Eagles' chances in transition.
Second Half: CCC Pulls Away
The second half followed a similar script, with CCC maintaining their shooting efficiency and capitalizing on SWCC's mistakes. The Flying Eagles managed 35 points in the final 20 minutes. However, SWCC's shooting woes continued, particularly from beyond the arc, where they hit just 2 of 12 attempts (16.7%).
Adrian Hunter-Mayes continued to battle on both ends, contributing points in the paint and grabbing key rebounds, but CCC's depth and shooting clinic were too much to handle.
