Cedar Bluff, VA- The Southwest Virginia Community College Men’s Basketball team returned to the King Community Center last night, looking to bounce back from their weekend defeat. Hosting Patrick & Henry CC, the Flying Eagles, led by Assistant Coach Jim Graham, delivered their most balanced offensive performance of the season, with five players scoring in double figures. Freshman Adrian Mayes led the charge with a game-high 28 points, propelling the Flying Eagles to a hard-fought 97-92 victory over the Patriots.
The game remained tightly contested throughout the first half, with neither team able to seize control. Sophomore Corean Nelson played a pivotal role early, scoring 11 of his 18 points in the first half while also facilitating the offense with five assists.
Sophomore Braydon Watson-Jones provided a strong shooting performance, knocking down three three-pointers in the first half. The Statesville, NC, native finished with 16 points and was the Flying Eagles' most accurate shooter from beyond the arc, hitting four of eight attempts. He also made his presence felt on the boards, securing eight rebounds.
Sophomore Anthony Leath had an efficient night, scoring 17 points on an impressive 7-for-10 shooting. He also contributed six rebounds, including three on the offensive glass.
Khalil Peoples continued his strong form from the previous weekend, stuffing the stat sheet with 13 points, a team-high nine rebounds, and five assists.
Adrian Mayes was dominant in the second half, scoring 23 of his 28 points after intermission. The Durham, NC, native controlled the paint, helping the Flying Eagles score 54 of their 97 points in the lane.
The Flying Eagles will look to build on this strong team performance when they host Guilford Tech CC on Friday, January 31st. Tip-off is set for 6:00 PM at the King Community Center.
