Cedar Bluff, VA – The Southwest Virginia Community College (SWCC) Flying Eagles hit the road Wednesday night, seeking redemption against Catawba Valley Community College after an earlier-season loss. However, cold shooting, turnovers, and rebounding struggles proved too much to overcome, as the RedHawks secured a 90-70 victory to sweep the season series.
Despite warmer weather in Southwest Virginia, the Flying Eagles' shooting remained ice-cold. SWCC shot 43% from the field and just 27% from three-point range, while Catawba Valley found their rhythm, hitting 49% overall and 39% from beyond the arc.
Freshman Adrian Mayes led the charge for the Flying Eagles, pouring in 22 points on an efficient 11-of-17 shooting. Sophomore Corean Nelson added 18 points, while fellow sophomore Braydon Watson-Jones chipped in 11. Off the bench, freshman Jabarey Hunt provided a spark with six points, two rebounds, and two steals.
Catawba Valley was fueled by a dominant performance from Benton Wofford, who finished with a team-high 21 points, including a scorching 5-of-7 from three-point range. The RedHawks also flexed their defensive muscle, forcing 13 SWCC turnovers and winning the battle on the boards with a 43-33 rebounding advantage.
The Flying Eagles will look to bounce back as they travel to Pitt Community College on Friday, February 7th, with tip-off set for 6:30 PM.
