Introducing New Head Coach Stephen Wagner
We are proud to announce Coach Stephen as the new head baseball coach at Southwest.
Wagner grew up in Las Vegas, Nevada where he attended Boulder City High School. He won multiple honors at shortstop and pitcher for the Eagles before moving on to Kutztown University (NCAA D2 PSAC) where he was a starting pitcher. He finished his collegiate career there, where he earned his Bachelors of Science Degree in Psychology.
Wagner began his coaching career following graduation at the NTXBC Dirtbags in Dallas Fort Worth, where he was an assistant baseball coach and Player Development. During his time with the NTXBC Dirtbags, he worked primarily with pitchers and catchers and spent time getting kids to colleges while also creating individualized programs for player development. The pitching staff saw huge improvements in all statistical categories under Wagner, while playing in the WWBA Perfect Game Tournament which saw over 400 teams.
Following his stint with the Dirtbags, Wagner was the Head Assistant Baseball Coach at Dawson Community College (NJCAA D2) where he handled pitching and recruiting, along with other responsibilities. Wagner's pitching staff set numerous records and were top 50 in multiple categories including the best ERA (5.51) since Dawson CC become an NJCAA D2 program. Wagner had 3 pitchers win conference player of the week and had Frederick Romano selected as all conference. Wagner also placed his sophomores to the 4 year level in which he sent 12 student athletes.
Wagner is also Driveline Foundations of Pitching, and Basics of Pitch Design Certified. He uses an individualized approach with his athletes, along with new age technology, analytics and data to maximize growth and development. Using the likes of Rapsodo, Traq, Pulse Monitor, and other systems helps to grow the athletes under his direction. Wagner has a vision of a bright future for Southwest Virginia Community College.
"I want to thank Jason Vencill, Robert Brandon, Tommy Wright, and the rest of the staff at Southwest Virginia Community College for the opportunity to lead this program. I am beyond humbled, and blessed for this opportunity and I can't wat to hit the ground running, bringing this program, the students, staff, and community a team they can be proud of on and of the field. We are going to play the gamer with an unmatched energy, passion, and commitment which will be seen from day 1. I want to give my student athletes the best experience that I can, and give them the freedom to be who they want to be on the field."
