Cedar Bluff, VA – The Southwest Virginia Community College men’s soccer team rallied from a one-goal halftime deficit to secure a 3-2 victory over USC Sumter on Saturday afternoon at the SWCC Soccer Field.
USC Sumter broke through first in the 39th minute when José Janiszewski finished a pass from Joaquin Gomez to put the Fire Ants ahead 1-0 at the break.
The Flying Eagles wasted little time responding in the second half. Just five minutes into the restart, sophomore Salvador Forte Vaz de Noronha netted the equalizer off a setup from Euan Whitty. Noronha struck again in the 53rd minute, this time assisted by Oscar Seliger, to give SWCC a 2-1 advantage.
Sophomore Ethan Sutherland extended the lead in the 66th minute with an unassisted strike that put the Flying Eagles up 3-1.
USC Sumter pulled one back in the 74th minute on a free kick by Luciano Viejo, but the Flying Eagle defense, anchored by goalkeeper Cian Thomas, held firm the rest of the way. Thomas tallied five saves in the complete-game effort to earn the victory in net.
Noronha finished the match with two goals, while Sutherland added one. Whitty and Seliger each collected assists in the win.
With the result, Coach Schetka's side improves to 2-1 (1-0) on the season. The Flying Eagles will return to action on Thursday when they travel to USC Lancaster. Kick-Off is set for 3:00 PM
